I’m sitting here smoking indoors in China, as God intended, reviewing the stream of Katy Perry videos flooding my Xiaohongshu feed the past few days.

The “Fruit Sister,” as she’s called here, is currently touring in China as part of her Lifetimes Tour (2025). That itself isn’t really news—everyone’s in China right now. (Hasan Piker, most notably.) What’s sparked my attention is the total MINISO ad wrapped around Perry’s visit.

A scene from the “Bandages” music video shows a woman riding down an empty mall escalator, holding a red MINISO shopping bag at her side, with storefronts and a café behind her and the subtitle “♪ MADE EVERY JUSTIFICATION ♪” across the bottom.

What’s in the bag, Katy?

A woman rides down a mall escalator in a white T-shirt and jeans, singing with her mouth open as she holds a red MINISO shopping bag with a plush toy peeking out; the caption at the bottom reads “♪ LOWERED MY EXPECTATIONS ♪.”

(Lowkey kinda funny to be holding a MINISO bag while singing “LOWERED MY EXPECTATIONS.”)

Tie your shoes, Katy.

The same woman lies sprawled on the mall floor at the base of the escalator, reaching toward a fallen red MINISO bag and stuffed animal as she looks up in shock, with the lyric “♪ BANDAIDS OVER A BROKEN HEART ♪” subtitled across the bottom.

RIP

In the “Bandaids” video, Perry keeps getting hurt in a chain of accidents. She starts at the kitchen sink, fishing a ring out of the drain as she sings, until a falling plate knocks the light and her arm is suddenly ripped off.

The scene cuts to her calmly sawing through a tree branch she’s sitting on, then tumbling as it falls, before we see her riding a mall escalator with a MINISO bag, shoelace untied, getting violently sucked into the machinery.

It keeps going on like this, and it’s caught Chinese netizens’ attentions.

People dressing up as MINISO bags? A successful campaign, I think!

Saw many Chinese users posting their twinning shots.

A variation on a theme.

This isn’t Perry’s first visit to China. She came in 2014 for a debut performance, then brought her Prismatic World Tour to Guangzhou, Shanghai and Macau in 2015. She hasn’t performed in China since, after she was reportedly denied a visa for the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai, following a 2015 performance in Taiwan where she wore a sunflower dress and wrapped herself in the island’s flag—imagery many in mainland China read as support for the 2014 Sunflower Movement. Now she’s back, this time draped in MINISO, the China-founded lifestyle brand best known for its cute toys and character merch.

During her stop this weekend at Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China, Katy Perry performed “Bandaids” while fans kept tossing MINISO teddy bears onto the stage. She darted around collecting the plushies and playfully throwing them back into the crowd. The moment doubled as live promo, sealing the association between “Bandaids” and the newly iconic MINISO teddy bear.

During her downtimes, Perry seems to be having a very traditional Chinese tour, praying at temples and donning traditional outfits. Sunflower dress? Not in sight!

Katy Perry posted this on her Xiaohongshu account this afternoon.

But Katy Perry isn’t the only American celebrity getting the MINISO treatment this week. The other MINISO x celebrity clip running across my feed? It’s of Paris Hilton:

She’s sliving—and the recent celebrity crossovers show MINISO is on the move.

Their spinoff Top Toy brand has filed to list in Hong Kong; timing is still TBA, but I’ll be watching 👀
